Meixcan Tourism died yesterday when bullets from a shootout were heard at the nearby tourist hotel Los Flamingos in Acapulco. The shootout occurred after the police received an anonymous tip that armed men were hiding at a house on the edge of the tourist city. 16 gunmen and two soldiers were killed in the shootout. 49 rifles and hanguns, 13 grenades and two grenade launchers were found in the house, along with a handful of kidnapped, half-naked police.
Mexican Tourism fell ill in early 2008 when soaring fuel prices and rising drug violence threatened its health. Last month a swine flu pandemic that infected thousands and killed dozens nearly left Mexican Tourism dead. Officials were optimistic about a recovery when the Acapulco shootout happened.
"It's over man," said Carlos, a local 'one-tequila, two-tequila, three-tequila, floor' t-shirt salesman said. "Que lastima."
Mexican Tourism is survived by domestic travel and its cousins, the Caribbean islands.
