In a gut punch to the economically hard-hit island nation of Iceland, McDonald's, symbol of all that is good and meaty, is pulling up stakes (or is it burgers?) and leaving the country.
While the franchise never quite prospered in the little island Utopia--most of its meat and special sauce was imported from the mainland, a Big Mac there cost over $6.00 as previously reported--it's still a rollicking symbol of the times when McDonald's closes shop.
Iceland joins only five other countries in the world where McDonalds set up shop only to later throw in the patty (sorry).
But Iceland isn't the only obscure European country to feel the pinch from the recession. In Latvia, Tele2 mobile company faked an elaborate meteor strike (covered by CNN) as part of a marketing ploy to lift people's spirits in these hard economic times, and improve sales. No word on how a faked meteor strike was supposed to actually make Tele2 money.
