September 7, 2009 promises to be a rough day for Samoans. They're changing the direction they drive on the road from right to left. Signs are posted. Public Service announcements have been made. But it only takes one.
The idea for the switch came to the Prime Minister back in 2007. According to the Wall Street Journal, he realized that cash-strapped Samoans could pick up clunkers from New Zealand and Australia if they switched to left-side driving. So, they are.
Those who are opposed have organized. People Against Switching Sides, or PASS, would prefer to keep the traffic flowing the same way it has since 1900 when Germany controlled the island.
Currently, about 70% of the world drives on the right side of the road. Come September 7th, that number will drop.
Ha ha. How omnious. First left-sided drivers, then... the world!
