Today it happened. Girlfriend came.
Make up. Earrings. Perfume, enough perfume to fill the entire room, the hallway. The whole 'shebang', as they say. Ha, ha.She didn't knock on the door. She leaned against it, one arm up high on the door jam. The boy sat up in bed. He swallowed. She slid off the door jam and walked to his bed, dragging one finger up the sheets from his toe right up to the middle of it all and pinched.
"Hi," she said.
"Hi," he said.
"Nurse is off duty."
"Oh."
She reached underneath her skirt and tugged down her panties.
She climbed onto the bed, first one leg, then the other until she straddled him. She put her hand behind herself and touched him. All systems go.
She leaned down and kissed him. She giggled and worked herself underneath the bed
sheet. He stared. His hands looked frozen. She worked his gown up under the sheets. She worked her skirt up.I had coffee at this point. I had to get coffee. The odds he would kick the bucket right there underneath her were slim. It wasn’t his heart that would go anyway. He has a strong heart. It's the rest of him that has the problem. I didn’t need to be there. I didn’t want to be there. Didn’t really girdle my loins, you know.
I spilled the coffee on the way back. Not much, they always fill it up, right to the Styrofoam
brim. They have to with these cups, they’re so small. 35 cents in a vending machine though, beats paying two bucks for the same thing in a paper cup down the street. There's this place in San Francisco that makes the best cup of cappuccino. That's worth two dollars. Soon enough. Lord, please. She was curled up next to him on the bed, under those sheets. I had barely been gone five minutes. He was still staring, but he had a grin on his face now, arms behind his head. She twirled a finger on his chest.
He whispered something to her and kissed her on the forehead. Her finger stopped twirling.
"Here?" she asked.
He nodded.
"Where?"
A lot of whispering lately. I forgot sugar.
