The $20,580 Monopoly Bailout

Held once every four years, players from around the world gathered at Washington D.C.'s Union Station yesterday to compete for $20,580 at the Monopoly championship. 28 competitors played behind velvet ropes, negotiated Park Places for B&O Railroads, and built small plastic slums on Baltic Avenue.

Getting here was no easy task. For selection the players had to play an online championship, and that was after the Monopoly essay where former champions were whittled out. "Would you rather have all the reds or yellows?" seemed to stump one former champion.

Ultimately, after a deft property flip and a missed chance to buy Park Place, a man named Marinaccio walked away with the $20,580--the amount of total money played in each game. The difference? This money was real.
